The Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival is one of the biggest charity events in the area and raises tens of thousands of pounds for local charities each and every year. It had been running for 18 years up until the pandemic put a stop to it in 2020 and you may be wondering if there will be a 2021 festival…
2020 was extremely tough on the events industry and companies like Gable Events (the organisers of the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival) had to face the cancellations of almost all of their bookings that year. With that in mind, after 25 years of successful business, the owners of Gable Events decided to retire early and close the company. However, 2 of their senior event managers decided to purchase some of their assets (including the dragon boats) to continue their legacy and to take on their annual festivals and clients under a brand-new company.
Lucy Morton and Alicja Mierzejewska successfully launched NewWave Events in June 2020 and have been busy with all things virtual ever since, with the hope to return to real events as soon as possible! Lucy said,
“Starting an events company during lockdown 1 was certainly a risk, but we knew we could make it work together and we just couldn’t let go of the dragons! We can’t wait to be back with all of our staff and participants at the festivals and other events when this is all over.”
NewWave Events will be continuing with the fabulous Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival but have decided not to run the event in 2021. This is due to the inability to plan in advance and the remaining uncertainty around the events world at this time. They are however very excited and optimistic for the future, and are grateful for the time they have at the moment to re brand all of their equipment and ensure that they will be back with a bang for 2022. Alicja says,
“I’m super excited for events to start up again and we can’t wait to bring the dragon boats back out on the water! We are preparing for the 2022 festival already and we hope to be back bigger and better than ever!”
