About The Construction Industry Dragon Boat Challenge

Dragon boat racing is the fastest growing water activity in Britain today – as well as the most fun! Up to 10 people paddle each 30’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and our helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit! 

The 22nd London Construction Dragon Boat Challenge in aid of CRASH charity takes place on Thursday 19th May 2022 at the West Reservoir Water Sports Centre in Hackney and up to 40 teams compete over the 150m race course, watched by hundreds of spectators. The London Construction Dragon Boat Challenge is mainly aimed at construction industry corporate groups who are looking for a great team building day out whilst supporting and raising money for CRASH charity. Upon entering, you can choose to upgrade your entry package to include a larger donation to the charity partner and you can also raise funds in your own way! You may have noticed a few changes here… Gable Events (the previous festival organisers) have now closed as the owners have retired. NewWave Events was created in June 2020 by two of Gable Events’ senior Event Managers with the full support of the owners of Gable Events. We have purchased their equipment and are taking on many of their annual events like this one. We cannot wait to deliver this amazing event again and we hope to see you all there!! ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED for Construction Industry Dragon Boat Challenge 2022!

So, are you interested in entering a team? You are in the right place - It’s quick and simple! All you need to do is read the entry categories below, choose the package which suits your team best, click on the ‘enter now’ button and fill in your details on our online entry form.

Alternatively, you can download our PDF Entry Form, fill in your details and send it to us by post at 8 Thornton Avenue, Barton Seagrave, Kettering, NN156QN or scan the entry form and send to dragonboatevents@newwave-events.co.uk.

Once we receive your entry we will send you an email with a payment link for card payment (transaction charge 2%), an invoice for a bank transfer or you can send us a cheque for the right amount (Please specify how you are going to pay on the entry form). You can also pay by card directly via the online entry form. Once the payment is received, we will send you an acknowledgement email with a confirmation of entry and further information on the event*.

If you are the assigned Crew Manager, we will be contacting you with any new information related to the event.

*Please note that your entry is not confirmed until you've received an acknowledgment email.

Entry Levels

Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. No refunds will be given once an entry has been accepted and there can be no refund if the Festival or racing has to be cancelled due to conditions outside the control of NewWave Events. Standard crew - £1,240 + vat plus £200 CRASH donation (£1,688.00)

  • High class venue and facilities

  • Prizes for the top three crews, the best mixed crew (minimum five ladies), the highest placed platinum crew and the crew raising the most money for CRASH £200 donation to CRASH

CRASH Premier crew - £1,240 + vat plus £400 CRASH donation (£1,888.00)

  • Package includes all the benefits of standard entry, £400 CRASH donation and acknowledgment on the Challenge website, crew managers pack, souvenir programme and results board.

CRASH Platinum crew - £1,840 + vat plus £600 CRASH donation (£2,808.00)

  • Package includes all the benefits of standard entry, £600 CRASH donation, company logo on each side of one dragon boat, half page advert in the printed and online souvenir programme and acknowledgment on the Challenge website, crew managers pack, souvenir programme, results board and commentary. The highest placed Platinum crew receives a magnum of champagne courtesy of CRASH.

How can you help?

In addition to your entry fee donation, you can help CRASH further and raise additional sponsorship as a team by setting up a fundraising page on Virgin Money Giving or using the sponsor forms provided. The crew that raises the most additional sponsorship for CRASH will win the CRASH trophy and a team prize. All forms with evidence of sponsorship money raised must be handed to the CRASH representatives before the crew races.

Private Room Hire

Four private rooms of various sizes and all with panoramic views of the racecourse are available for hire. All rooms have tables and chairs and sliding doors to the outside. They also offer the option of a private bar and catering. There is usually heavy demand for these rooms and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Close-up Magician

With a vast repertoire that has been built up over many years performing as a professional magician, Carl uses simple props such as playing cards, coins, sponge balls (for his golden ball routine) and elastic bands. Carl also performs close up mind reading that will leave you stunned and amazed. 

Laser Clays

Experience clay pigeon shooting with authentic shot guns converted to fire a laser beam at the clays instead of lead shot. See your scores mount up on the electronic score board and hear your clay smash with a realistic sound system. 

Souvenir Programme

We are introducing a new online version of the souvenir programme for 2022!! There will be a limited number of printed Souvenir Programmes to help the environment and encourage sustainability. We’ve also introduced a LIVE RESULTS page for up-to-date race results on the day. The QR code will be given out on the day so it’s easily accessible by crews and spectators.

Advertise in the souvenir programme and promote your company’s services or products at the construction industry’s premiere team event. With one click of a button your advert can be seen by hundreds of participants and spectators!

Crews comprise of up to 10 paddlers plus a drummer – squads may be larger (max 15 persons). Crews can be mixed, all female or all male and organisations may enter more than one crew. The minimum age is 16 and no previous experience is required. All crew members must be confident in cold water conditions, wearing light clothing and in moving water and compete entirely at their own risk. BDA qualified helms, buoyancy aids and water safety cover are provided by the organisers. All crews accepted for entry must abide with the competition rules and entry details on this website. Each crew is guaranteed a minimum of 2 races (subject to conditions).

The Crew Manager will receive a full Crew Managers Information Pack a month prior to the event.

In the case that we, NewWave Events, have to cancel the event due to government rulings or restrictions against COVID-19, the below will apply;

If the event is cancelled on or before Thursday 21st April 2022, teams will be eligible for a full refund.

If the event is cancelled on or after Friday 22nd April 2022, teams will be eligible for a 25% refund of their entry fee.

Please note, the above refunds would not include any donations made to CRASH charity, they would be from the entry fees alone.

If the event has to be cancelled for any other reason out of the organisers control, or you (the team) have to pull out for any reason, the usual cancellation terms apply.
